Duong Long Cham temples
Nestled along the coast of central Vietnam, Quy Nhon is a hidden gem that offers a perfect blend of history, culture, and stunning natural landscapes. A motorbike journey to explore the ancient Cham temples in the surrounding area is a must-do for any traveler. Our day trip adventure began with a hearty breakfast and took us to three magnificent temples: the Banh It Cham Temple, the Duong Long Cham Temple, and the Canh Tien Cham Tower. Here’s a detailed account of our unforgettable day.

Our favorite breakfast: Morning Delight at Tree Hugger

Our day started at Tree Hugger, our favorite breakfast spot in Quy Nhon. The cozy café, adorned with lush greenery and vibrant decor, served up a delightful breakfast. We indulged in fluffy pancakes topped with fresh fruits and a smoothie bowl that was as delicious as it was nutritious. With our stomachs full and spirits high, we hopped on our motorbike, which we had previously purchased in bustling Saigon, and set off on our temple tour.

First Stop: Banh It Cham Temple

Our first destination was the Banh It Cham Temple, located about 20 kilometers from Quy Nhon. The ride took us through scenic countryside, with lush green fields stretching out on either side of the road. Upon arrival, we found ourselves alone at the site, surrounded by the serene beauty of the temple.

The Banh It Cham Temple, also known as the Silver Pagoda, is a fascinating structure built by the Cham people between the 11th and 12th centuries. The temple stands majestically on a hill, offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. The red-brick tower, adorned with intricate carvings and sculptures, was a testament to the architectural brilliance of the Cham civilization.

We spent some time exploring the temple, admiring the detailed artwork, and soaking in the peaceful atmosphere. However, dark clouds loomed in the distance, signaling an approaching storm. Not wanting to get caught in the rain, we decided to move on to our next destination.

An Unexpected Delay

As we made our way to the Duong Long Cham Temple, the sky opened up, and rain poured down on us. We decided to take shelter in a small village along the route and stopped for a quick drink. The villagers were warm and welcoming, offering us hot tea and a place to rest until the rain subsided.

When we were ready to continue our journey, we discovered that our motorbike had a flat tire. The nearest repair shop was about 2 kilometers away, so we had no choice but to walk, pushing the motorbike along the way. It was a challenging trek, but the friendliness of the locals and the picturesque scenery made it a bit more bearable. We finally reached the repair shop, where the mechanic swiftly fixed the tire for a mere 30 cents. With our motorbike back in action, we resumed our adventure.

Second Stop: Duong Long Cham Temple

The Duong Long Cham Temple was the furthest from Quy Nhon, about 40 kilometers away, but it was worth every kilometer of the journey. The temple complex, consisting of three towers, is one of the tallest Cham structures in Vietnam, standing proudly in the midst of a tranquil landscape.

As we arrived, the rain had cleared, and the sun shone brilliantly on the ancient towers. The sight was breathtaking. The tallest tower, soaring to nearly 24 meters, was adorned with detailed bas-reliefs depicting Hindu deities and mythological creatures. The craftsmanship was exquisite, showcasing the Cham artisans' incredible skill.

We explored the temple complex, marveling at the architecture and the sense of history that permeated the site. For a while, it felt like we had stepped back in time. Eventually, a man on a motorbike arrived to collect an entrance fee. We gladly paid the modest 50 cents each, knowing it was a small price for such an awe-inspiring experience.

Final Stop: Canh Tien Cham Tower

With the sun beginning its descent, we headed back towards Quy Nhon, making one final stop at the Canh Tien Cham Tower. This temple, perched atop a hill, offered a different but equally captivating experience. The ride up the hill was a bit challenging, but the panoramic views of the surrounding countryside made it worthwhile.

The Canh Tien Cham Tower, built in the late 12th century, is known for its unique architecture. The tower, made of red bricks, stands out with its tall, slender structure and intricately carved details. Unlike the previous temples, this site was more touristy, with a few other visitors milling about. However, the beauty of the tower and the stunning views from the hilltop made it a perfect end to our day.

We spent some time at the Canh Tien Cham Tower, taking in the serene ambiance and reflecting on our day's adventures. As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting a golden glow over the landscape, we felt a deep sense of contentment. The journey had been filled with unexpected challenges, but the rewards were immense.

A Memorable Journey

Our motorbike day trip to the pagodas around Quy Nhon was an incredible experience, offering a glimpse into Vietnam's rich history and culture. Each temple had its own unique charm, from the solitude of Banh It Cham Temple to the grandeur of Duong Long Cham Temple and the scenic beauty of Canh Tien Cham Tower.

Traveling by motorbike added an extra layer of adventure to our trip, allowing us to explore the countryside at our own pace and connect with the local people. Despite the unexpected flat tire and the rain, the journey was filled with moments of awe and wonder.

For travelers seeking an off-the-beaten-path adventure, a day trip to the Cham temples around Quy Nhon is highly recommended. Start your day with a delicious breakfast at Tree Hugger, and then set off on your own motorbike journey to discover the ancient wonders of Vietnam. Each temple tells a story of the past, offering a window into the rich heritage of the Cham civilization. And as you ride through the picturesque landscapes, you'll create memories that will last a lifetime.
